We feel his tension and stress about being back in his hometown (especially since he and his father were driven out of it years ago), but where’s his anger? Falk is one of those awkward protagonists whom things just kind of happen to. I also thought that most of the characters were kind of forgettable and not very fleshed out. What The Dry gets wrong: The Dry starts with the grisly murder of a family, but then it slows down significantly plot-wise as Falk slowly puts the pieces together in his investigation and reconnects with his past. ![]() You really get a sense of the town’s desperation and isolation as the drought ruins their farms and livelihoods. I enjoyed the back-country Australian setting of Kiewarra and colloquialisms that the characters used. The chapters are just the right length to move you ahead in the story. What The Dry gets right: The Dry is written in an easy-to-read, no-nonsense style of writing. Aaron Falk, a policeman and former outcast of Kiewarra, comes back to pay his respects and ends up investigating the murders that were supposedly committed by one of his childhood friends. The Dry is a murder mystery that takes place in a small town experiencing drought and soaring temperatures in Australia. Alone, in that monstrous wound, Falk put his face in his hands and, just once, screamed himself. He stood on shaky legs, his vision blurred, as all around cockatoos whirled and screamed into the scorching red sky. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here are the things we talk about in this episode. ![]() ![]() Find many more outstanding podcasts at dia/podcasts!
